Approaches for Teaching Content to English Language Learners

Pearson draws on current research to integrate the best practices for teaching English language learners in the classroom. Distinguished education and language researchers provide an overview.

Introduction to Basic Principles for Teaching Content to English Language Learners

Pearson provides an introduction to five instructional principles for teaching content to ELLs. These 5 Principles, which Dr. Jim Cummins and a panel of education and language acquisition experts selected from the research base,  have been embedded directly into Pearson’s K–12 programs to help meet the basic needs of English language learners in the content area classroom. Pearson provides teachers with an introduction to these basic Five Principles that can be further developed with SIOP® (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) professional development. SIOP® offers teachers a comprehensive framework in the sheltered classroom.

Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP®)

Developed by Dr. Jana Echevarría, Dr. MaryEllen Vogt, and Dr. Deborah Short, the SIOP® Model is the only empirically validated approach for implementing effective sheltered content instruction for students who are acquiring English as a second (or multiple) language. The SIOP® Model includes eight research-validated components and thirty features that, when used in combination, consistently and systematically have been found to improve both the academic content knowledge and academic language proficiency of English learners as well as all students.
